Yeah Yeah Yeah’s – It’s Blitz!
Release Date: 03/31/2009
Interscope Records
Rating: 3.5/5
If this album played without Karen O’s vocals, it would be virtually impossible to tell that this was the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s. Gone is the dirty simplistic riffage of Nick Zinner that was once one of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s distinguishing trademarks. Once stripped down distorted guitar parts have now been swapped out in favor of a much fuller sound; one filled with electronic glitches, keyboards, and a cool calm bite. This doesn’t make the songs any less listenable…For the most part. The album kicks off with it’s first single “Zero” that plays as the perfect introduction to their new sound. It is immediately noticeable from the first song that, despite the change, Karen O is still a whole lot of woman. On songs like “Runaway”, “Zero” and “Dull Life”, Karen groans, moans, and shrieks in her trademark voice that demands attention and control of every song. It’s when Karen O shies away from what makes her great that this album stumbles the most. Skeletons is a monotonous number that starts off like it could have the success of mega-hit “Maps” if it ever tried to go anywhere. “Hysteric” and the album’s closer “Little Shadow” both fall prey to poorly executed ballad and the album closes with a pitiful whimper. Despite these flaws, it’s hard to overlook the good in It’s Blitz! Whether it’s the infectious chorus of “Dull Life” or the cocksure stability of “Runaway” It’s Blitz! is a commendable release, one that should keep die-hard fans content while opening the door to a broader audience with their new found sound.
