Heres a short little review a wrote for Portugal. The Man’s newest release Censored Colors:
3.5/5
Portugal. The Man’s 3rd full length in 3 years is a mixed bag of sorts. The band have taken a completely new direction from the riff-rock based Church Mouth to a more acoustic/soft psychedelic rock sound. The sound works perfectly for the Alaskan natives on stand outs such as the poppy opener “Lay Me Back Down” or the drawn out bluesy works of “New Orleans.” However, the album does begin to drag a bit, at times seeming to be a little TOO fluid and put together for its own good. Spans of this album do get a little tedious and a bit boring which is something that Portugal. The Man has never done to me before. Censored Colors is definitely not their best work, but I have confidence that as one of the most determined and hardest working bands out there today, they will be back to redeem themselves of this fickle release.
Oh, I forgot to mention. The physical release of this CD is sick. Bands like PTM are the reason I still purchase CD’s. Filled with innovative, cool artwork and actual copies of the lyrics (would you believe that?!) its nice to see that some bands still care that OTHER aspect of their album.
