Monsters of Folk’s highly anticipated debut will be released this Tuesday the 22nd. For fans who have already got their hands on the leak, it should be no surprise that Monsters of Folk delivers on everything promised and maybe even a little bit more.
As a highly biased lifelong follower of Conor Oberst, it’s easy for me to admit that he shines brightest, even when being shunned from the opening and closing tracks of the album. “Map of the World” is Conor’s last appearance on Monsters of Folk, rumbling in on a train-paced acoustic strum. Oberst wastes no time delving into his trademark deft wordplay that has made him such a polarizing, iconic figure over the years. It’s become apparent that Oberst is no longer the angst-ridden teen that penned the greatest releases of his catalog. Instead, it seems that Oberst is content to “kill the shadow of yesterday” and become life’s seasoned veteran, putting it’s greatest trivialities into words that us mere mortals cannot.
