I just got a hold of Deerhunter’s 3rd full-length “Microcastle.” It’s so fresh, it doesn’t even have artwork yet!

I never really understood the hype of last years “Cryptograms.” With the exception of the title track, I didn’t really find much appeal in their drone/shoegaze sound. However, I decided to give them another chance, and I must say, I have been pleasantly surprised.

Microcastle is noticeably more focused and accessible. Where Cryptograms seemed to drag on unfocused, Microcastle finds Deerhunter playing more catchy “pop” songs. This is most obvious in the opening 3 tracks. One things for sure, this album is poised to be on the top of people’s 2008 lists.
