The Low Anthem has been getting some love around here lately, and for good reason. Smart Flesh has been getting a lot of replay around here, and to top it off they recently did a daytrotter session which is never a bad thing. The band even did “I’ll Take Out Your Ashes which you should know already, is by far my favorite track off the disc

There’s nothing like finding solace in the beauty of a simple song. The Low Anthem seem to be masters of that craft, combining raucous old western folk with stark trembling acoustics on their new album Smart Flesh. My favorite cut by far is bookend track “I’ll Take Out Your Ashes”. The album version contains nothing more than a plucked mandolin as it treks through it’s bleak surroundings. It’s a completely stunning track considering it’s timid atmosphere. Preview it live above, but I highly suggest picking up Smart Flesh and hearing the studio version.

i almost forgot how chill inducing the stark acoustics and lonely high vocals of the low anthem’s album first “charlie darwin” was until i was reminded by their late night performance on letterman from last night.

Summer is officially gone. With the introduction to dreary, cloud heavy weather, it’s definitely hoodie season where I reside.

While many will be mourning the death of summer, I for one am ecstatic for the change. Fall is without a doubt my favorite time of the year. October means a few good things in particular
-The upcoming line-up of all the good holidays is drawing near.
-The start of the NBA season is right around the corner.
-I don’t need an excuse to stay inside, eat and be lazy.

In addition to all these great things, my musical preferences always seem to change during this time. Cutting back on the poppier and heavier sides of the musical spectrum, I always seem to dive headfirst into a pool of stark acoustics, greyish ambients and, lazy pop. Hopefully this mix reflects that, and will accompany you through the best time of the year.

RIYL: Bon Iver , Iron and Wine, Fleet Foxes

Rhode Island’s The Low Anthem’s full-length Oh My God, Charlie Darwin is the most jaded, juxtaposed release I’ve yet to come across this year. The album is split in two, one side featuring barren acoustics reminscent of Bon Iver, and the other featuring ruckus infused dirty dance hall brawls. The two sides intertwine throughout OMGCD in a jumbled fashion, but before you even have time to be completely mind-kicked by The Low Anthems antics, the album opener “Charlie Darwin” starts and steals the show.

The aforementioned barren acoustics are layered with Ben Miller’s vocals, hinting at a mixture of Bon Iver and Iron and Wine. The pale instrumentation is hushed and stark, with Miller taking center stage. It’s not hard to be pulled into the dark cold waters by the title-track, what’s hard is trying not to become completely emerged.
