2011 has came and gone. Here’s a list of bands that I’m anticipating hearing from this year. Some are concrete, some are hopeful speculation, either way this year is going to be awesome.
If you know of something I don’t have on here, hit the replies and let me know!
Aesop Rock // TBA
In a recent AMA on reddit, Aes confirmed he’s nearing completion of his new record. Fingers crossed we’ll be hearing more soon
Andy Hull / Jesse Coppenbarger Split // TBA
After posting this footage of Colour Revolt and Manchester Orchestra’s prolific frontmen in studio together, Andy Hull confirmed that the two are working together on some sort of split. Heavenly.
Animal Collective // TBA
AC plan to head into studio this month with 15 new songs
Anthony Green // Beautiful Things // January 18th
The legendary Circa Survive frontman will return with his second solo full-length. All indications point to this one being another landmark in his impressive career.
MP3 // JAMES’ SONG
Bad Books // TBA
Andy Hull stated in a recent interview that recording would be commencing this month for Bad Books second album
Beach House // TBA
The band have been playing new material for almost a year now, surely we’ll be hearing something before this one ends
Big Boi // Daddy Fat Sax: Soul Funk Crusader
Back in July, Big Boi was 17 songs deep on his new album and anticipated a release in late 2011. Obviously, that never panned out and he’s been silent of where progress stands lately, but best guess is we’ll see it this year.
Black Moth Super Rainbow // Psychic Love Damage // TBA
Bloc Party // TBA
Bloc Party are currently in New York working on their fourth album, and currently have over 15 songs written for the record.
Brand New // TBA
I have extreme hesitations putting this here, but after the bands recent end of year activity, the Brand New faithful can cross their fingers that more is on the horizon in 2012.
Circle Takes The Square // Decompositions: Volume 1 // TBA
Circle Takes The Square promised their new full-length would be out by the end of 2011 but fell short after releasing the first part of it on the Rites of Initiation EP. The band have gone silent on plans for releasing the new record, so any concrete release date is really up in the air on this one.
Cursive // I Am Gemini // February 21
“I Am Gemini is the surreal and powerful musical tale of Cassius and Pollock, twin brothers separated at birth. One good and one evil, their unexpected reunion in a house that is not a home ignites a classic struggle for the soul, played out with a cast of supporting characters that includes a chorus of angels and devils, and twin sisters conjoined at the head.” – How could any Kasher / Cursive fan not be completely losing it after reading this?
The Early November // TBA
Eisley // Deep Space EP // February 14
Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros // TBA
The band apparently have enough new material to “record a double album” and are holing up in the deep woods of Louisiana to record the hotly anticipated follow-up to Up From Below
Foxy Shazam // The Church of Rock and Roll // January 24
MP3 // I LIKE IT
Fun // Some Nights // February 12
Fun return with their sophomore full-length. Much like it’s predecessor, I fully expect this to be on tons of “best of” lists at the end of the year.
MP3 // WE ARE YOUNG
Godspeed You! Black Emperor // TBA
The band will be playing 5 consecutive nights in San Francisco this April. Could 2012 finally be the year we get new GB!YE material?
Good Old War // Come Back As Rain // March 6
Grizzly Bear // TBA
Head Automatica // Swan Damage // TBA
This album has been done since May of 2009. I still have no idea why we haven’t heard it yet.
Joyce Manor // TBA
After releasing one of the best albums of 2011, Joyce Manor wasted no time and entered into the studio in November to record its followup
Kanye West // Good Music // TBA
Really hope yeezy follows through with this and we get it this year
Letlive // TBA
The band plan to hit the studio this spring/summer to write Fake History’s follow-up
Little Joy // TBA
Little Joy were working on album number 2 this summer, though no concrete information is available on when we might see it
Metric // TBA
Metric “are slated to release their fifth studio album in spring 2012”
mewithoutYou // TBA
After ditching their premiere of new material due to a lackluster studio session, mwY have been quiet about their new album, although it appears that it’s most likely completed. I think we’ll be hearing more very soon
Key Studio Video Session #5 – Me Without You from WXPN FM on Vimeo.
MGMT // MGMT // TBA
In April 2011 they began work on their third album, which will be called MGMT.
Miniature Tigers // Mia Pharaoh // TBA
After releasing Boomerang, the first single from the third Miniature Tigers full-length a few months back, the band have promised we’ll be hearing release confirmation of the new album very soon
Modest Mouse // TBA
Modest Mouse turned heads when news surfaced last spring that Big Boi was in studio helping them produce their new record. The band later debuted two new songs at the Sasquatch Music Festival but we’ve yet to hear anything else regarding the new record.
Nas // Life Is Good // TBA
After releasing the album’s first single “Nasty” this past summer, expect to see the full album coming sooner rather than later
MP3 // NASTY
Now, Now // Threads // March 6
I really believe this will be the record that launches this band to the next level.
MP3 // DEAD OAKS
Of Montreal // Paralytic Stalks // February 7
MP3 // WINTERED DEBTS
Perfume Genius // Put Your Back N 2 It // February 21
MP3 // ALL WATERS
Pacific UV // Weekends // January 31
MP3 // FUNNY GIRL
Right Away, Great Captain! // The Church of The Good Thief // TBA
RAGC fans have been waiting almost four years for the final chapter in the RAGC trilogy. After such a long incubation period, I expect nothing short of a masterpiece from this epic finale.
Say Anything // Anarchy, My Dear // TBA
The Saddest Landscape // After The Lights // February 14
MP3 // IN LOVE WITH THE SOUND
The Shins // Port of Morrow // TBA
Sigur Ros // TBA
“Sigur Rós have ended to their three-year hiatus with plans to release a new album in the spring. The “floaty and minimal” LP, their sixth, was recorded at the band’s swimming pool turned studio outside Reykjavik” – The Guardian
Sleigh Bells // Reign of Terror // February 14
MP3 // BORN TO LOSE
Tennis // Young and Old // February 14
Tennis – Origins by All Tomorrows Parties
Tilly And The Wall // TBA
The band are finishing up the new record right now
WHY? // TBA
Back in September, the band was halfway done recording the new record, hopefully we’ll get a new Why? release this year
Yeasayer // TBA
The band promised their follow-up to Odd Blood will be “like a demented R&B” record
